The rapidly increasing prevalence of autism is having a major impact on North American society. If we do not successfully address this phenomenon (reality) (crisis) our civilization will become incapacitated.  There are many organizations established to recognize neurodiversity, and others to bring aid and support to those in the full range of the spectrum.

SEVERE AUTISM

While the spectrum is wide, and many autistic people enjoy their neurodiversity and enjoy their contributions, on the far end are 29% of children with severe autism.   The regular world presents them with such turmoil they stay home a lot.  Severely autistic children (usually) start from birth as healthy, developing infants. Early on, they had an experience with immediately altered their responsiveness, mobility, disposition, behaviour and – their trajectory. The loss of their authentic child to families is devastating. Parents then face years of effort and expense trying to recover the child. The parents and siblings and grandparents face the all-consuming prospect of life-long care for a non-verbal child, in diapers, with seizures, digestive problems, and often violent. All this while burdened with the fury, guilt, regret, disappointment, isolation, exhaustion, dread. Going out takes effort and has risks so we do not see these autistic children or adults much. However, it is estimated that 25% of autistic children are in this category. If 1 in 31 children now are being diagnosed with autism, consider how many 10,000’s of such damaged people exist. If we do not stop this tide of escalating autism, our continent will be completely overwhelmed and devastated with families and communities coping with this one issue.
